Chelsea prepares Raphinha backup plan.
As the controversy around the Leeds winger rages on, Chelsea is contemplating another inexpensive option for Raphinha. Maxwell Cornet of Burnley has therefore become a target, however, The Athletic claims the Ivorian is only likely to become a genuine target if they lose out on their major targets.
But it's the first indication that the west Londoners are thinking about safety-conscious alternatives to the Leeds United winger. Upon Burnley's relegation to the Championship, Cornet's contract's £17.5 million release clause was activated.
Numerous teams now have a cheaper summer alternative, allowing Thomas Tuchel to recruit a player who has always wished to be like his fellow countryman and club hero Didier Drogba. Before Burnley visited Stamford Bridge last season, Cornet spoke with Sky Sports soon after joining the club "Because Didier Drogba, my hero, was a Chelsea player, I followed them closely. He has been quite helpful to me. He advised me to work hard throughout the week, rest, and play hard the following week."
Boehly plots a £43m bid
To acquire Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP, Chelsea will reportedly make an offer of roughly £39 million, plus an extra £4 million in add-ons, according to A Bola via the Express. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton are allegedly pursuing the deal, although the west Londoners are hoping to take advantage of the lack of offers from interested parties.
According to reports, Bruno Lage's team has engaged in "extensive discussions" with the Portuguese powerhouses, but despite making a competitive offer, Nunes is unsure about moving to Molineux. Additionally, it is also uncertain how Wolves would afford a counteroffer to the west Londoners' interest now that Ruben Neves is no longer expected to depart the club.
According to reports, Tuchel could be able to sign his first player of the summer with Chelsea's offer, which would be a bold but unconventional deal. However, if Nunes, whose Sporting contract expires in 2026, keeps his word, it could be difficult to broker a deal.
Chelsea enters Kimpembe talks
Presnel Kimpembe's transfer to Chelsea has advanced significantly, and Tuchel is planning to welcome "one of two" key defensive targets this week. With his future at Paris Saint-Germain becoming more and more unclear, the 26-year-old has been extensively linked with a transfer to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The France international reportedly spoke with the Blues about a prospective transfer to west London, according to The Times. After another dominant year, Kimpembe, whose contract at Les Parc des Princes expires in June 2024, was scheduled to meet with PSG's recently recruited sports director Luis Campo to discuss his future in the capital.
